Show #668: INDIVISIBLE

On this empowering episode, join us for TWO show segments, featuring INDIVISIBLE and the BLS.

Our first segment is all about the military’s new Blended Retirement System (BLS).  First Command financial advisors, Shavona Floyd and Jessica Blaisdell focus on the imminent end of the 2018 opt-in period, the importance of spouse participation in retirement decisions (and financial decisions in general), and how military families can make the most of their retirement benefits.

During our second half-hour, we will be talking with Army Chaplain Darren Turner, and his wife, Heather, who will share with us about the movie, INDIVISIBLE, which is based on the extraordinary true story of their fight to save their marriage after Darren returned from the battlefield.

Show #657: Tough As They Come

Retired Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, author of the bestselling memoir, “Tough as They Come,” tells how despite losing portions of both arms and legs from an IED while on active duty in Afghanistan, he continues to overcome life’s challenges, breaking physical barriers and defying odds. Travis lives by his motto: “Never give up. Never quit.”

5 Ways to Help Children Adjust to a PCS

5 Ways to Help Children Adjust to a PCS

PCSing is hard on the entire family, but when you have children, they may take it the hardest. No matter their ages, a big life change like moving is a traumatic experience in their lives.

When PCSing from a loved location or a location where your family may have lived nearby or there were good friends made, the move is even harder for everyone. While you’re mourning the loss of this location, keep in mind that the rest of your family is, too.

The Right Time for Resilience

The Right Time for Resilience

What if someone offered to make you a stronger, more resilient person before you took off for that new duty station? What if you had the opportunity to participate in a program that could help you with problem solving and maintaining a positive outlook at whatever life (and the chaos of a move with kids and pets) can throw at you? A little resilience can help.

Take a minute and think about the PCS checklist you have at this time of year.

Recon Rendezvous: A Little Milspouse Fun

Recon Rendezvous: A Little Milspouse Fun

It’s no secret that I’m a rather outgoing gal. I’m an extrovert to the core and energized by being with people. I’m not afraid to try new things and tackle a new adventure, which probably makes being a milspouse a solid fit for me.

So, with this personality set up, one might think that “having fun” comes naturally. Surely I’m the life of the party and always looking to add fun to my everyday, right?

Find Joy in Your PCS by Dancing in the Rain

Find Joy in Your PCS by Dancing in the Rain

Not proud of my mindset, I began preparing for our 13th move while still unpacking from the 12th.

I was in the garage unwrapping pictures I never bothered to unpack from the last move (just a mere 10 months ago), and I was feeling a little overwhelmed and a whole lot irritated. After unwrapping a few items that resulted in instant remorse for not trashing them at the last duty station, I came across a small wooden sign that read:

They’re Saying Aspergers

They’re Saying Aspergers

Ten years. It had been 10 years since I delivered my last baby boy, and I was telling the nurse that if she didn’t grab a doctor immediately, she or my husband would have to try to play catch.

Everything since that moment has been a ruck I was not equipped for.

I look back through photos and I see it more clearly now. Isaiah always had this almost constant anxiety/intensity about him, this more focused look in his eyes. I remember bringing it up to a doctor once, but she didn’t think too much of it.

What Does It Mean to Be a Resilient Military Family?

What Does It Mean to Be a Resilient Military Family?

The speaker held an egg delicately in one hand and a fuzzy, lime-green tennis ball in the other. Addressing the class, she asked us to imagine what would happen to the egg if she let it drop to the floor, and I wrinkled up my nose as I pictured the splat of runny yellow yolk. Moments later, the tennis ball met the same fate, only, this time, the speaker actually let it fall to the ground. Unlike the egg, the ball hit the tiles with a soft thwack, then gracefully rebounded to her open hand. We were at a resilience briefing.
