Hold on to Yourself: Support for Caregivers

Hold on to Yourself: Support for Caregivers

There are many healing and helping hands that touch the transition of a military member back to civilian life, especially if there are injuries involved.

The most overlooked and under-appreciated of that group? The family caregiver, be it a spouse, parent, or another member of the family. They perform a near-constant labor of love. They are the front line of all the spilling emotions, mood swings, and sleepless nights.

Many try to balance a full-time job with the role of primary caregiver. Often, they have children too, which adds another vital role of keeping the family safe, secure, and running smoothly.

Warrior-Scholar Project has a positive impact on the veteran community by making it easier for veterans to transition from the battlefield to the classroom. This program prepares veterans for college life in their endeavors to pursue their academic goals upon completion of military service.

Mindfulness: The Key to Building Your Presence

Military life is beautiful, exciting, heartbreaking, and exhausting all at once. From OCONUS to CONUS moves, trainings that seem so frequent it all just becomes a blur, to deployments that go by at a snail’s pace. On what feels like a rare occasion, when you and your spouse get downtime to sit and chat, have you ever reflected on all that you’ve been through as a military family?

Hope For The Warriors is here to tell you that you are resilient. Need proof? Just look at the number of curtains you have accumulated from all the moves. Life in the military, whether you are an active-duty service member, veteran, or family member, necessitates resilience.

I Wish I Was This Wise 50 Years Ago

I recently completed a walk across America to raise awareness and advocacy for our veterans. It was a 110 day walk, from May 15 to Sept. 1, from my home in Newburyport, MA, to San Diego, CA. I took only five days off to rest. You will undoubtedly hear more about my walk in the following months, because it was the one of the most meaningful events in my 72 years of life.

But, today, I want to talk about women who are so supportive of their husbands/partners during times of deployment. (I am well aware that many women are also on active duty and have partners supporting them, and I will write about that topic in the future).

AWTR Show #708: Vets Don’t Forget Vets

William Shuttleworth is a 72-year-old retired educator and Air Force veteran living in Massachusetts. He left his home on May 15, 2019, to walk across America in an effort to raise awareness for American veterans via the campaign Vets Don’t Forget Vets. He arrived in San Diego on Sept. 1, 2019, completing the trek of 3,300 miles in 115 days. During his journey, he focused on sharing information about veteran suicide, homelessness, health care, policies, and set out to raise $100,000 for Disabled American Veterans.

Warrior’s Compass: Transition Made Easier

Transitioning into a post-military life is full of emotions for both service members and their families. Leaving behind a position surrounded by so much purpose and camaraderie can leave you feeling lost or out of place. It can be overwhelming and daunting to start afresh in a completely new environment. It can be discouraging as you face difficulties, especially if they are financial.

Luckily, regardless of the stress that comes with such a big life transition, there are many resources that can help make that change easier. One such resource is Hope For The Warriors’ new military-centered job search program: Warrior’s Compass.
