The Gift of Military Life: Why I Feel Lucky to Be a Military Spouse

I never imagined that one day I would be standing at the crossroads of challenge and opportunity, wearing the title of “military spouse” with pride. Yet, here I am, an Army wife of almost 12 years, married to a soldier, raising four incredible children (ages 10, 8, 6, and 4), and homeschooling them as we navigate the ever-changing journey of military life.

In military life it is easy to dwell on the hard parts: the goodbyes, the unpredictability, the constant packing and unpacking. But today, I want to focus on something else.

I want to focus on how lucky I am to be a military spouse.

Lucky to Live Everywhere

When I first married my husband, a Veterinarian in the Army, I had no idea what life would truly be like. We’ve been blessed to live all over the United States. I have loved our time exploring San Diego, Philadelphia, and San Antonio, and the countless stops in between.

Each place has shaped us, tested us, and opened our eyes to new possibilities.

Every duty station has given us something new: a new culture to embrace, new friendships to cherish, and new experiences that have shaped our family.

We’ve watched fireworks on the Fourth of July in different time zones, stood in awe of historic landmarks, and learned the unique beauty of every place we’ve called home. Not many families get this kind of adventure, and for that, I am truly lucky.

Lucky to Grow Through Change

Military life is a masterclass in adaptability.

There is no comfort zone here—just a constant state of learning, growing, and pivoting when necessary. I’ve had to be stronger than I ever thought I could be, not just for myself, but for my children and my husband.

While goodbyes are always hard, I’ve learned to treasure the hellos just as much. I have friends across the country, sisters in this military spouse life who have walked beside me through TDYs that never seem to end, PCSes that didn’t go as planned, and everything in between.

Every challenge has only made me stronger, more resilient, and more grateful for the incredible people I’ve met along the way.

Lucky to Serve in Our Own Way

Being a military spouse isn’t just about supporting our service member, it is about embracing the opportunity to serve in our own way.

Whether it’s through working a job outside the home,  volunteering, mentoring new spouses, or simply showing kindness to a struggling friend, we have the chance to make an impact wherever we go.

If you choose to, you get to raise children who understand honor and service from an early age.

They see the flag waving and know it means something. They watch their parent put on the uniform and understand the weight of duty. And they learn, through every move and every new experience, that this country is worth fighting for, no matter who is in charge.

Lucky to Be Part of Something Bigger

At the end of the day, military life is bigger than just my family or my story. It is about generations of men and women who have stepped up to serve, and the families who stand behind them. It is about being part of a legacy that stretches back centuries and will continue long after us.

I am lucky to witness my children growing up with a sense of duty, integrity, and courage. I am lucky to be part of a community that understands sacrifice and strength.

I am lucky to live a life that, while challenging, is filled with adventure, purpose, and community.

So yes, I am lucky to be a military spouse. And if you’re walking this path too, so are you.

Because we don’t just endure this life, we embrace it, and in doing so, we have the opportunity to shape the future.
