True or False: Resume Edition

Resume assistance is the number one request I receive from clients that I work with. There are a variety of formats, fonts, writing styles and outlines available to draft ideas from. While there is a level of creative freedom in writing your resume, let’s talk about some common myths surrounding them.

An objective statement is necessary.

FALSE: An objective statement is no longer needed on a resume. Instead, a professional summary at the top of your resume is a great way to summarize your hard skills and overall relevant experience in a way that makes it easy for an employer to understand.

You need to include references.

FALSE: A reference list takes away crucial space on your resume.  Include it in a separate document to provide to a potential employer upon request.

Your resume needs to be tailored to every job you apply for.

TRUE: Many organizations are using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Tailoring your resume and including relevant key words provides you an opportunity to progress in the application process.

Your full address should be on your resume.

FALSE: It is no longer recommended to include your full address. Simply list the city, state and zip code instead.

Include your LinkedIn account URL on your resume.

TRUE: This is a great way to network and give an employer the ability to scan your profile. Make sure your profile is complete and that the information matches your resume. They should mirror each other

I hope these tips are helpful! Resumes are an important part of the job search and having the right tools is essential. Personalizing your professional experience and modernizing your resume ensures you put your best foot forward into your new career.
