We’ve all heard that quote, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Several years ago, this quote ticked me off. Mainly because I wanted my dearest, darling, most-handsomest-stud-of-a-new-husband around all the time. I didn’t want to spend my time missing him, regardless of what I could gain from that.

Walking the Line
Have you ever heard a song that just sticks for some reason? One you didn’t think much about until someone drew your attention to it. That’s what happened the other day when the song “I Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash was mentioned as containing many parallels to military life. When it was first mentioned, I didn’t think much of it, but then I pulled up the lyrics to read through them. As military spouses, we’re walking the line every day.
The Sisterhood of the Yellow Ribbon
Recently, I turned in my notice to my job as Uncle Sam decided to move us elsewhere. I’m deeply saddened by this. I found a position within my field where I flourished and excelled. A pit of disappointment has stayed with me since the moment I realized I was leaving a position where I felt at home.
I was given the opportunity to expand the knowledge of many child care facilities across Washington, and in doing so, I hoped to have a lasting impression on the education of the children. I enjoyed the adventures in my work days that took me all across the landscape of the state. Most importantly, I met several resilient retired military spouses who shared office space with me.
A Salute to the Military Family
I’ve long held a deep respect and gratitude for our military and their service to our country even before becoming a military spouse. Our service members are willing to lay their lives on the line so that others don’t have to experience how war touches their lives. Since joining the ranks of military spouse several years ago, I’ve also grown to greatly appreciate the sacrifices of the families of our service members as well.
November is Military Family Appreciation Month, as declared in a proclamation signed each year by the president as a way of honoring and celebrating military families and recognizing their sacrifices and dedication to our nation.
Best Compliment Ever: The Ultimate Battle Buddy
As a military spouse, I am a compliment-soaker-upper. No, I don’t mean from the random passersby who give awkward backward compliments of “You’re so strong. I don’t know how you do it.”
I’m talking about soaking up compliments from my husband, so I can stockpile them in my brain/heart for when he’s away doing stuff for his Army job.
Post PCS: The Next Adventure
This month I am saying a big “hello” to everyone from the land of Lincoln, AKA Illinois, on our new adventure.
We moved here at the end of September. So far, things are going well, although living on an Air Force base has been a big adjustment. For one, it is about five times smaller than Joint Base Lewis McChord (maybe even more)! There is probably two miles between the main gate and the gate at the end of the base. There is only one shoppette, which also triples as the Class Six and Firestone. The BX and the commissary share a parking lot, and in general, it’s just tiny!
