Loneliness. It is by far one of the strongest and most common emotions shared by military spouses. For a long time, I thought that “being lonely” was just a part of the job. I was serving my country by supporting my husband, and in the end, that just meant being alone was something I would have to learn to live with.
Family Readiness Groups can be such a wonderful asset to military spouse life. It can be a great place to connect, meet people, and receive important information about all things mission-based.
Unfortunately, all it takes is one rough FRG experience to make military spouses a bit hesitant or skeptical to participate. (It certainly follows the concept of “One bad apple ruins the bunch.”)
When living overseas, it’s very easy to quickly begin missing certain things about the good ol’ US of A. It’s not that other countries necessarily “get it wrong,” but rather that it’s different from what Americans are used to. Over time, we adjust to the host nation’s culture, and it becomes our new normal.
But really, we still kind of miss certain things.
I knew the day was coming, but it felt so far away. In fact, it still doesn’t feel real. It happens all the time in the military community—people move, and then they move again. I’ve said it many times—it’s a small big military, and we never lose our forever friends; they just move a bit. I’ve also always said people are closer than ever with Facebook and texting. But when I know they’re leaving, it make me want to cry, “Why does she have to PCS?”
If you’re anything like us, you often spend what extra leave time you might have visiting family. And, if you’re anything like us, you might have come to realize that pretty much all the leave your partner takes turns into”‘vacations” visiting your family.
Since my husband and I have the majority of our family within driving radius, we spend all our leave time, and now four-day vacations, visiting.
As we just celebrated the mother of all American holidays, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride in being a military spouse, especially an Army one! My pride in this fact does not always manifest itself in an over-the-top “We can do it” mantra (but in all honesty, I have flexed my bicep during a few solo PCS moves and deployments). I don’t always feel like a mighty military spouse.
