In the Spaces: A Deployment Poem

I miss you in the spaces.

When the world is still.

After the phone calls stop, errands end

And the day has had its fill.

I glide through the chaos

Through the noise

Every busy hour ’til

I miss you in the spaces

When the world is still.

I miss you in the faces.

Of a stranger who has your smile

Of one who wears your favorite shirt

Or jokes in your same style.

There’s a million faces in the crowd

But some just hypnotize

And I’ll miss you in the faces

Of those who have your smile.

I miss you in the places.

A corner where we kissed

A clever sign that’d make you laugh

Or a store you say you’ve missed.

I get the pang in rooms you’ve been

And some I’ve only wished

But I miss you in the places

Like the corners where we’ve kissed.

Each day we shrink the spaces.

Another checkmark on the wall.

One day the face found in the crowd

Will find me when I call.

The places that were meant for two

Won’t make me feel so small.

One day these lonely spaces

Won’t be hard to fill at all.

Turn on the Hose

Turn on the Hose ….At our last duty station, we owned a farmhouse on 5 wooded acres. It was our own patch of paradise, and we raised many animals there. Early on, we had some of the land cleared, fenced, and sowed grass for a pasture.
