Joanna Calbrese….. Passionate About Philantropy
“I have been passionate about philanthropy since middle school and continue to give back in my personal and professional life.”
I had the honor of meeting Joanna Calabrese some years ago and below are a few questions which I asked to understand what is behind her motivation. Reading between the lines, Joanna has found the balance between two passions. It is interesting how getting involved with an exercise program it can open other doors.
I think Joanna may agree that through her travels and being involved with the sport and being able to give back, there is a sense of accomplishment. Joanna will never know the number of lives which she has made a difference. During the process, those individuals paid it forward.
How long have you been in the sport of running?
From elementary school to college, I was always part of a sports team–soccer, gymnastics, swimming, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse–I loved the comradery and teamwork. After graduating in 2004 and busy with work, I was looking for a way to exercise on my schedule, and, for the first time, went running by myself for pleasure. It was a wonderful way to explore the DMV (Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia), I loved I could learn the streets of my neighborhood and experience the monuments and memorials at any hour.
What changes have you made in your lifestyle because of being in the sport?
Now, without fail, I buy new running shoes every 6 months.
How do you know when you have given your best in an event?
In my late 20s and early 30s, I would compete against my PRs. I loved experimenting with distance races – starting off slowly and ending the last mile with my fastest time. Or being fast out of the gate and knowing I gave it everything I got as I struggled across the finish line. It turned out that my overall time wouldn’t be drastically different, so I prefer the slow to fast method–it’s more fun to finish strong!
Do you feel that this sport is emotional? Such as, do you get upset over not running a target time?
Nope–not for me.☺ I’m happy to run, uninjured and for pleasure.
What is your motivation for staying in the sport?
I enjoy running–it’s calming for my busy brain.
What is the value of belonging to a running club? What club are you a member?
I’ve been a member of DTLA (downtown Los Angeles) Running since I moved to LA in 2017. After 15 years as a running club, we achieved 501(c)3 status in late 2023, and they elected me Treasurer of the first board. The club’s vision is to 1) Help people become the best versions of themselves, 2) Create a vibrant community in DTLA, and 3) Help DTLA flourish. We support local establishments, volunteer in our community, and all our runs traverse downtown Los Angeles. And, as I’m sure everyone here knows, it is a great way to meet friends, stay in shape, and become a better runner!
What challenges have you faced because of being in the sport?
Early in my running “career” I faced a few injuries–IT band strain and sore ankles and knees–that sidelined me for weeks to months at a time. I learned, with the help of my more experienced running friends, about the importance of rest days, cross-training, the right gear, and proper nutrition. I’m happy to say that I’ve been injury-free for over a decade.
Was there an event where you did everything right and how did you feel?
I’d have to choose my half marathon PR at the Rock ‘n’ Roll race in DC in March 2016. It was cold and rainy, which, surprisingly to me, turned out to be great running conditions.
What would you say to a person who wanted to run as a form of exercise?
Do it!
What do you want the reader to know about Joanna?
While training for the Marine Corps Marathon in 2010, I would run along the Capital Crescent Trail fixated on which eatery I’d be at later that day for a milkshake. Bobby’s Burger Palace on K Street (sadly now closed) had my favorite of the 20+ I tried–Pistachio!
