News 6 Mashup: May 9, 2022

Here is this week’s News 6 mashup of stories for the week of May 9, 2022, straight from AWN News 6 Correspondent, Jolene McNutt:

Holistic Teams Serve DoD Beneficiaries with Lost Limbs

“There are more than 30,000 Department of Defense beneficiaries with some level of limb loss or dysfunction,” shared Health.mil. This includes combat veterans but also those who have lost limbs in other ways, including car accidents. Three military health facilities are tasked with caring for these patients: San Diego, California, San Antonio, Texas and Bethesda, Maryland. Each location “provides specialized and holistic care through multidisciplinary teams.” The teams are made up occupational and physical therapists, doctors that specialize in rehabilitation, nutritionists, behavioral health specialists, pain management specialists, plastic surgeons, dermatologist and neurologists. The goal of the holistic teams is to look at each individual patient and help him or her live a full life, not just focus on the injury.

Free Military Spouse Virtual Symposium

May is a month to celebrate military spouses and the Department of Defense is encouraging participation in their free Virtual Military Spouse Symposium that runs from May 10 through the 12. The symposium main focus this year is the “whole spouse” and “how spouses can take the best care of themselves and ensure family well-being.” One of the highlights will be a virtual networking session where participants will be grouped into rooms of 10 to 15 people where they will be able to network. That particular session is on May 12 at 3:30pm EST. A total of 16 sessions will be offered through Zoom. Check out the full schedule and register at MySECO.

Blue Star Families Celebrates Military Spouses

Blue Star Families is also celebrating Military Spouse Appreciation Month with events throughout May! This week you can join in to a live chat about career growth in tech and they are giving away one scholarship to VSchool so that a lucky milspouse can become a web designer. The event is live on Wednesday, May 11 at 1pm EST. You can see the full schedule and register at Blue Star Families.

This Week in History

On May 10, 1797 the first US Naval ship, the USS United States, was launched! According to Wikipedia, the USS United States was a “wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate” and was the first of six authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. The ship was built at Joshua Humphreys’ shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

You Serve Too! I’ve been a military spouse for six years, and in many ways, I know we’ve been incredibly blessed. My husband is on full-time orders as a recruiter, which has allowed us to stay in Upstate New York for the entirety of our marriage.
