They’re Saying Aspergers

They’re Saying Aspergers

Ten years. It had been 10 years since I delivered my last baby boy, and I was telling the nurse that if she didn’t grab a doctor immediately, she or my husband would have to try to play catch.

Everything since that moment has been a ruck I was not equipped for.

I look back through photos and I see it more clearly now. Isaiah always had this almost constant anxiety/intensity about him, this more focused look in his eyes. I remember bringing it up to a doctor once, but she didn’t think too much of it.

4 Ways to Make Solo Parenting Easier

4 Ways to Make Solo Parenting Easier

As you probably hear quite often, military life usually has no shortage of separations. It’s hard enough being separated from your service member because Murphy’s Law often comes to light. It can get more trying when you have other engagements, but especially if you have children.

I’ve come to call the time I parent alone “solo-parenting.” I know some people consider it “single parenting,” but I think that misses the mark. Milspouses are fortunate enough to have financial and emotional support from a spouse, unlike actual single parents.

But we certainly do parent solo for a period of time while our service members attend school, go on temporary duty, or depart for a deployment.

5 Ways to Help Your Military Child Cope with Separation

It’s inevitable. At some point, the service member will deploy, embark on a temporary duty assignment, or leave to spend time in the field. It’s often difficult on our military kids, especially the younger ones who aren’t sure how to process the information. In addition, military children are often separated from extended family like grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

When my husband and I moved to Germany during our last PCS, it was a serious transition for our children. We had lived within two hours of my side of the family, and I think we all got used to that nearness.

We moved halfway across the world and now the children didn’t get to physically see our extended family in person nearly as often. To make matters worse, my husband was set up with a rotational training unit and often left for the field for extended periods.

A Letter to My Military Brat

A Letter to My Military Brat

On May 22, 2017, at 1:52 p.m. my first baby boy, Mark, came into the world after a 10-hour labor.

The moment I’d been dreaming of since I was a little girl began in an instant, and it hasn’t slowed down since. I’ll never forget the moment my husband and I walked into the house with that clunky infant carrier and over-packed diaper bag, looked at each other, and uttered, “Now what?”
