During those 300 intervening years, many houses have been built with generations living and dying— sometimes dying within those actual houses. It is quite uncommon in Vermont for your home to only have two digits in its age. Saying your home is 100 years old makes your home the youngster on the block. When my wife and I bought our first home, long before deciding on a military life, we chose a two-story 125-year-old duplex. It was located in a small village, and many years previously had been a restaurant as well as an apothecary, among other things.
Oh, the history this home could tell if it could talk.

Under normal circumstances, winter brings to mind the joys of the holiday season and spending lots of time indoors living our best hygge lives. Unfortunately, 2020 has been anything but normal.

It’s probably happened to all of us.
There we were, minding our own business. We walk past a room, a piece of furniture or some other seemingly normal object in our home then it hits us in the face like a freight train: “What is that awful smell?!”
For me, in a house full of kids, dogs, and a husband with his endless mound of military gear, this happens more often than I’d like to admit. Oh, and don’t get me started on the trash can…
The Great Camp-In
Six years ago, when my oldest was only a wee Kindergartener, I decided to put her in Girl Scouts so she could get some social interaction with kids her own age. The Daisy troop already had a leader but needed a co-leader, so I signed up to help and was promptly indoctrinated into the world of squealing, excited-little-girl wrangling.
Trying to handle 10+ girls and lead them through badges and journeys took all of the strength that we had, but it forever cemented my love for the Girl Scouts!

National Flag Etiquette: Memorial Day and Veterans Day
What Army spouse’s heart doesn’t swell just a bit when she or he hears the sharp flap of our beautiful American flag as it waves in the wind? It represents our wonderful country and the service for which their family devotes themselves. It always flies on post, sometimes in our front yards, and may well be what covers our hero’s casket at the end of life. To respect our flag and what it stands for, it’s important to know some of the background and etiquette that is expected of us.
