Check In on the Strong Ones, They Need Support Too
As a seasoned spouse, I’ve seen the rise of the word “resilience” in military circles. I appreciate — greatly — the focus on building strong skills for coping.
That Little Black Band
As part of a military family, the POW (Prisoner of War) and KIA (Killed in Action) bracelets are something I easily recognize.
A couple years ago, I realized that not everyone knows what they are. One morning, a college professor visiting Germany for a class asked me if I had been to the club the night before. Apparently, the clubs near his university use black bands to identify those old enough to drink. I was caught off guard, and once I showed him the three names that were engraved on it, you could tell he was caught off guard
Take A Social Media Break
The week before Christmas was a challenging one for me on social media. The realization that I had become so over-involved in Facebook that it could affect me for days profoundly prompted me to try a little experiment.
What if I just took a break from Facebook? After all, I didn’t have to be logged in 24/7.
You Can Stop Complaining Now
Do you know that cartoon Caillou? If you have a preschooler, I’m guessing you do.
I cannot stand that show. Every time I hear the theme song, it makes me want to jam crayons in my ears and glue my eyes shut.
A Cautionary Tale for Landlords
In a perfect world, landlord/tenant relationships would be easy for military homeowners. And while most relationships are amicable, there are instances when things go awry. We have discussed various ways to prepare for new tenants and to how to create a positive landlord/tenant relationship, but we have yet to delve into ways to prepare and protect you as a landlord in the event that the relationship breaks down.
Mandatory Fun
‘Tis the season for mandatory fun. This time of year brings FRG potlucks, coffee group white elephant exchanges, and all sorts of other renditions of the same. Some are even our service member’s “place of duty” during the event. So, that means they either go alone, toting our mini cheesecakes with them and a potted plant for the gift exchange, or it means we go, too—kids and all.
Stop and Smell the…Candy Canes?
It’s the day after Christmas, and for many of us, that means we’ve been going non-stop for a while now. There is the traveling to see family (or family traveling to see you), the shopping for gifts, shopping for special occasion food, shopping for the toilet paper you were just about to run out of, and, well, shopping for shopping’s sake. Visiting friends, baking cookies/cupcakes/pies for home, work, and school. Many of us spend an awful lot of December in either the car or the kitchen.
