I can’t say that I dreamed of you when I was little girl. I never paired my Barbies with any of my brothers G.I. Joes. In truth, I always wanted to marry a man who drove a convertible. But one day you came along in a truck that I had to climb to get into instead of a convertible, and eventually, you asked me to marry you.

Congratulations! You have made it through your initial and individual training and arrived at your first duty station. You may still feel new to the military, but you should be filled with the pride of finally being able to practice your military profession. A great experience at your first duty station is a critical step to propel you and your military career to lifelong success.

A few anniversaries ago, my husband surprised me with a small gift. It was one of those Army wife stickers. But not just any sticker—one that said “Army Wife: Toughest Job in the Army.”
I was touched at the gesture, said a polite “Thank you?” (yes, with a question mark at the end), and put it on my car.
In my heart of hearts, I didn’t know how to react to the gift. I mean, yeah, sure, being a military spouse is a tough thing about 98% of the time, but it’s not like I’m getting deployed for a year at a time and carrying a rucksack on my back on a regular basis.
Do you allow yourself to stay awake deep into the evening, worrying about things that will never come to pass? Do you find yourself thinking about yesterday and how it will affect your tomorrow? This has been me since the middle of May. Something struck at home and consumed me with worry—worry for today, worry for tomorrow. I haven’t been able to think and dreams haunt my night. I’ve finally found the courage to write about it and hope it helps you, too.
