As military spouses, of course we know the big perks of military life—highly discounted medical care, free housing, travel opportunities—but sometimes we miss the little perks that make military life so worth living.
When asked about military life, many times we tout the tough stuff like moving, and…moving again, our service member’s work schedule, or long times apart. But if we dig a little deeper, we might find a few nuggets of greatness we often overlook:
We’ve almost made it through April. And if you live anywhere near a military installation or are part of any social media, you’re most definitely are aware that this is Month of the Military Child.
And with this knowledge comes the fun fact that the “official flower” of the military child is the dandelion.
I have alluded, in previous blog posts, to the Family Readiness Group and how much I believe in the purpose and mission of the FRG (feel free to insert your branch equivalent here).
The FRG is such a powerful, useful resource for so many different aspects of military life, but I fear that we’re forgetting why this organization is so important in our military spouse life.
In honor of April, Month of the Military Child, I’ve been reflecting on things I’ve learned from military children. Our 6-year-old son, Finn, has unknowingly taught me a lot on our military life journey. I think that’s true for many military kids who are often born into this lifestyle. They must learn to be flexible, adaptive, and yes, resilient, a word I’ve come around to after almost a decade of this life.
I love being married to my husband, and I would never want to know what life would be like if we hadn’t decided to get married. As you know, he’s in the military and being married meant leaving my friends just three-ish months after our wedding.
“See you later, friends. This wife is off to a new adventure!”
I’m not one to get fired up and rant about stuff (and really, compared to some of the hoopla we see on social media, I’m not sure if what’s coming is even classified as a rant). But, there’s one response that people give me when I’m trying to articulate the struggles of military marriage that grinds my gears:
“Well, you knew what you were getting into when you married him.”
