I’m thankful that maintenance came and fixed the oven door
I’m thankful that there’s no carpet lining our dining room floor
I’m thankful that our table fits this house’s weird layout
And that the china survived another move despite my fears and doubts
It always feels nice to be celebrated, so if you’re looking for a little appreciation for your service member this Veterans Day, take advantage of some discounts at restaurants and in stores.

“It’s a trap!” my husband warns himself.
“No, it isn’t. I mean it when I say I don’t care to celebrate Valentine’s Day. I’m really that girl, and you married me. Thank you for marrying me…”
There is a pretty good reason why I don’t care to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my husband. We met four days after Valentine’s Day, and every year, that day, that’s the important day. It’s my favorite day of the year—the day-that-we-met day. I would so much rather celebrate our day than Valentine’s Day.
“My leave’s been approved.”
Such a sweet string of words for any milspouse to hear, and the beginning of yet another military countdown.
The days that followed consisted of lists, prioritizing, planning, and goal setting; everything was entered into my calendar. What could go wrong, right? Well, as any seasoned milspouse knows… lots!
There’s something special about this time of year.
There’s combat-boot footprints of mud in our kitchen. Random winter military clothing piled in seemingly every corner of the house. Faded and mismatched green socks are hung by the chimney with care. MRE’s are roasting on an open fire.
Quite picturesque, yes? Okay, maybe not exactly.
As I write this, I’m looking around my current duty station house with the packers scheduled to arrive in less than four days. It’s Dec. 8, and we’re PCSing for our first OCONUS move before Christmas, which means we’ll be living in a hotel over the Christmas holiday.
Every year I tell myself, “I’m going to start my holiday shopping in July!” Every year, I actually start my holiday shopping in December. I shop for my son and husband, nine nieces and nephews, my parents, my in-laws, grandparents, teachers, and other extended family that would make this an incredibly long list. Not only that, I can’t just make a purchase. I have this internal drive that pressures me to ensure the gift will be (at the very least) somewhat liked!
