Finding the Balance: Working From Home with Kids
The pandemic forced a lot of capable people to move from working in an office to working from home. Although I’m grateful to still be getting a paycheck during this time, it has not been an easy transition. However, regardless of the pandemic, I was lucky enough to score a permanent work from home job!
I didn’t account for working from home with kids, but just like I was forced to transition, so were my kids. I went from a working mom and wife, to a working mom and wife plus homeschool teacher (thanks, COVD!).
It wasn’t easy at first.
My patience was tested daily.
But, once we figured out a routine, it was easy peasy moving forward.
Summer Bucket List: COVID-19 Edition
I had a moment of… Panic? Disappointment? Fear? Anxiety? Stress? Well, definitely a mix of those emotions when my son’s teacher said that they were done with school work… three weeks earlier than I had expected.

When I realized that school was over, my stomach dropped. Working part time from home while trying to keep a 9 year old engaged in healthy behaviors hasn’t been easy. Just yesterday, he spent almost the entire day parked in the same chair. I feel like summer break should be coming to an end… but it has only just begun.

Marriage is hard work. Then throw in the fact that your spouse serves in the military. The hard work factor just jumped up a few levels.

My husband and I are going on almost 16 years of marriage, with all of them being within the context of the Army. We certainly don’t have it all figured out, nor do we have a perfect marriage, but over the years we have discovered some core values that we implement in our marriage that help us weather the stress of all that life throws at us. Year of the Bundt
As military spouses, I know many of us are accustomed to moving all. the. time.
You get to a new place, you start to unpack your stuff, and then you open up a box that you haven’t looked at since the beginning of the last move and find a hidden gem in there…
Maybe it’s the butter dish that went missing four years ago, tightly wrapped in packing paper and tucked inside your old microwave (that happened).
Maybe it’s the top screw to your gorgeous bamboo paper towel holder, stuffed inside a trinkets box from when you lived overseas (yep, that also happened).
Maybe it’s your husband’s entire set of West Point beer steins and their glass pitcher, expertly wrapped but boxed in with old college textbooks (you betcha that happened).
Or maybe it’s an old Bundt cake cookbook, one that you’ve never even opened, but your kids find it and start to flip through it, exclaiming over every single recipe.. Well, when that happens, there’s only one thing to be done—you make a pledge then and there to pick out a Bundt and make one per month for an entire year.
Moving Into a New Rental? Tackle These Important Tasks First
After the final box is unloaded and the last mover has shut the door, it’s time to take a quick breather and set your action plan into motion. The first things to do after moving into your rental home are a little bit different for everyone, but many of us focus on the most important tasks so we can begin calling our new rental house our home.
The trick is to uncover what your family prioritizes the most. Is it cleanliness, and removing every trace of the previous tenants? Or, do you prefer to focus on a few zones of sanctuary to nest in, happy to have somewhere to retreat to when you need a break?
