Hair Love for My Little Lady
I knew I was watching something special when I saw the 2020 Oscar-winning Animated Short Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver. It is a beautiful short film that shows an African American father struggling to figure out how to do his daughter Zuri’s hair.
Full disclosure: I am very susceptible to cinematic crying. This seven-minute film has me on the brink of tears every time I watch it. It is not just the showcasing of family love. Nor is it just the precious moment between Zuri and her mother. There is something powerful about the message of Zuri loving her beautiful hair—for all of its fierceness and curliness.
Army Strong, Marriage Style
Long, long ago, in a city far, far away (Hanau, Germany, to be exact), two young kids met and fell in love.
Life was amazing! They could go on hikes in Switzerland, take the train to Paris, have goulash in Hungary… They thought to themselves, “Man, marriage is awesome. We are totally rocking at this! I mean, honestly, how hard can it be?”
Well, fast forward about 15 years, four deployments, and three kids later, and those young kids have the answer to that question—marriage can be hard.
Really, really hard.
Like, Houston-we-have-a-problem hard.

Let’s Really Talk About Love
Did you know that in a recent Gallup Poll, only 8 percent of Americans look forward to Valentine’s Day? When you see all the floral arrangements, the cards, the endless rows of chocolates, heart-shaped soaps, candles, and sweet little gifts, you would think it is the day of all days.
Well, apparently it isn’t.
When we think of Valentine’s Day, it conjures up this fantasy of love and romance that may happen for a brief moment in one’s life.
But, let’s face it—in reality, the Cupid moments of Valentine’s Day are for romance novels, country songs, and the movies.

USAREC Nashville is part of the 3rd Recruiting Brigade, and the Nashville Battalion encompasses more than 60,000 miles in 165 counties that span across Tennessee, Kentucky, and portions of Indiana, Illinois, and Virginia. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, this battalion includes three Military Entrance Processing Stations—two of which are in Tennessee (and one in Kentucky) and operates through 37 recruiting stations.
Caregivers Need Support, Too
When John Dale returned home from Iraq in the fall of 2005, all seemed fine.
“He didn’t show any signs of PTSD or any physical injuries,” recalls his wife, Sarah. “He was just happy to be home and alive.”
But once what Sarah refers to as “the adrenaline from combat” subsided, PTSD symptoms came bubbling to the surface. Multiple physical injuries also began to appear. And Sarah’s role as a caregiver began.
By 2014, the year Sarah first became involved with Hope For The Warriors as the recipient of a Caregiver Scholarship to attend graduate school, John’s PTSD evolved to the point that he medically retired from the military.
