Walking the Line

Walking the Line

Have you ever heard a song that just sticks for some reason? One you didn’t think much about until someone drew your attention to it. That’s what happened the other day when the song “I Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash was mentioned as containing many parallels to military life. When it was first mentioned, I didn’t think much of it, but then I pulled up the lyrics to read through them. As military spouses, we’re walking the line every day.

The Sisterhood of the Yellow Ribbon

The Sisterhood of the Yellow Ribbon

Recently, I turned in my notice to my job as Uncle Sam decided to move us elsewhere. I’m deeply saddened by this. I found a position within my field where I flourished and excelled. A pit of disappointment has stayed with me since the moment I realized I was leaving a position where I felt at home.

I was given the opportunity to expand the knowledge of many child care facilities across Washington, and in doing so, I hoped to have a lasting impression on the education of the children. A Salute to the Military Family

A Salute to the Military Family

I’ve long held a deep respect and gratitude for our military and their service to our country even before becoming a military spouse. November is Military Family Appreciation Month, as declared in a proclamation signed each year by the president as a way of honoring and celebrating military families and recognizing their sacrifices and dedication to our nation.

It takes me a grand total of 2.6 minutes to start dreaming of my husband’s sweet homecoming after he departs for a deployment, school, or extended time in the field. That isn’t an exaggeration. Less than three minutes after he leaves for a “trip,” I’m already plotting and planning for his return: what I’ll wear, where we’ll go to dinner, our first date night agenda, and the beer selection I’ll have waiting for him at home. I dream of those day dates at pumpkin patches, cooking experiments in our kitchen, and trips to the state park with our pups.

Maybe you can relate to this—I spend so much time dreaming about a picturesque reunion that I forget about reality.

5 Tips for Receiving and Unpacking HHG

5 Tips for Receiving and Unpacking HHG

Every time I receive news that we’re going to PCS, my mind focuses solely on how we’re going to get to our next duty station, what things I’ll bring, and what household items I’ll watch be packed and shipped away.

I rarely put time into deciding how I’ll tackle the challenge of receiving HHG and going about putting everything away. Watching box after box come through the front door and garage can be overwhelming, especially when standing in a new house that you’re unfamiliar with.
