8 Ways to Enjoy a Connection with Your Child
In a world where things often feel disconnected, forming and maintaining a personal connection can be a challenge. Although we have greater, often instant, access to each other via the technology at our fingertips, we may be sacrificing quality for quantity in our connections, even within our family relationships.
It’s Okay to Disconnect
I’m staring at this computer screen, and I’m annoyed. So annoyed I could cry. Why? I’m annoyed because I’m ashamed of my recent behavior. I’ve become a hermit in a disconnect from the rest of the world.
See, I had surgery seven weeks ago, then I got really sick last week, and I’ve basically become a hermit. Thanks to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and email, I’ve been able to keep in touch with people. Oh, and texting. Can’t forget the good old smartphone.
I’m not out of the loop, but I haven’t spent quality time with people I love in more than a month.

10 Years Ago: A Woman Veteran
Ten years ago, this month, I left my last job. It’s been that long since I worked for a real paycheck—hard to believe. But I was pregnant with Izzy and unable to do a lot of the things my boss needed me to do, like guard an alleged domestic abuser, run for any length of time, and deploy to a war zone again. After 10 years, you’d think I’d be used to the stay-at-home, regular life.
I’m not.
5 Ways to Spread Your Wings as a New Milspouse
I’m finally in Washington! Officially joining my husband and moving out of state for the first time has given me insight into how to rock this latest role in my life.
Here are five ways to adjust and spread your wings as a new milspouse:
Relationship Minute: Time With Your Spouse
Do you know what time it is?
There are 168 hours in a week. It sounds like a lot—and it is—but it doesn’t always feel that way. Ten minutes felt like an hour when I was in school, watching the clock tick down to the dismissal bell. Today, an hour feels like ten minutes when it’s the last hour before my son leaves to go back to school. You probably feel the same when your spouse is leaving for deployment.
The importance of an hour is certainly impacted by what is happening and how I feel about it. To get the most out of my 168, I need to invest some time in figuring out how I spend those hours.
Recon Rendezvous: Backward Compliments
Early on in most courtships, compliments flow like honey:
Darling, your eyes sparkle like the stars in the heavens.
Honey, you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on.
Sweetheart, your voice is like an angel, and I dream about you every day.
And then we get married.
And we get all militarized.
