The Gift of Variety in My Civic Leadership Journey
I sit clutching my bag as I wait for the announcer to call my name.
Let’s Recon Rendezvous, Military Family!
I always prided myself on being independent.
As a military spouse, it’s a good attribute to possess… for the most part.
But shortly after jumping headfirst into this milspouse life, I realized that too much independence wasn’t such a good thing.
Here’s what happened:
Military Spouse Career Fears
I never anticipated life as a military spouse being easy. (Heck, I never anticipated life as a regular old spouse being easy.) I don’t think anyone ever does. We pretty much knew what we were signing up for; we weighed the benefits against the drawbacks and decided that yes, we can do this.
We can move wherever they decide they want to send our service member and possibly live there alone if they get deployed.
5 Pre-Deployment Financial Tips
In the midst of packing bags and saying goodbye during your service member’s pre-deployment, emotions are running high. It’s difficult enough to make time for the grocery store, let alone worry about organizing your finances for the next few months or years. I use words like “fantastical” on a regular basis.
I occasionally throw a “fo-shizzle” in there, although I know it is so 2011.

When I was 6 years old, I made my first “official” best friend. Her name was Melody, and we were in the same first grade class. Although I don’t remember a lot from when I was 6 years old, I remember that Melody was, in my 6-year-old world, the best thing to ever happen. We had a lot in common—her dad was in the Navy, so was mine. She was waiting for her front tooth to come in, so was I. We liked the same music. We liked going swimming.

What if you decided today to make intentional living your focus?
February tends to be that time of year when our thoughts inevitably turn toward love, romance, and relationships—and sometimes earlier, since most stores start putting out Valentine’s Day-themed merchandise before the Christmas stuff is even off the shelves.
