I know your struggle, because until just a few months ago, I was that spouse. I couldn’t move with my husband when he came to a new duty station because I was in school. I couldn’t visit because I couldn’t miss any more classroom time.
It’s hard sometimes, as a military spouse, when our spouse is away on a deployment, TDY, other work-related leave, or after having children to be able to get some quality time with our spouse to keep the romance alive.
We’re alone without our other half until they return, or if they’re home, we usually wait until the kids are in bed to maybe be able to watch at least a show together.
As this new year begins, my husband and I are about to celebrate the 13th anniversary of when we started dating. I sometimes can’t believe I’ve spent almost half of my life with him already, but something even more surprising is how much life we’ve gone through these last 13 years: separations, deployments, multiple PCSes, parenthood, struggles, and successes.

We’ve all heard that quote, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Several years ago, this quote ticked me off. Mainly because I wanted my dearest, darling, most-handsomest-stud-of-a-new-husband around all the time. I didn’t want to spend my time missing him, regardless of what I could gain from that.
As a military spouse, I am a compliment-soaker-upper. No, I don’t mean from the random passersby who give awkward backward compliments of “You’re so strong. I don’t know how you do it.”
I’m talking about soaking up compliments from my husband, so I can stockpile them in my brain/heart for when he’s away doing stuff for his Army job.
A couple of weeks ago my wife, Joy, and I dropped our son off at the dorm for his freshman year of college.
Yikes!
It seems like yesterday we were walking him to the bus stop so he could ride to kindergarten with his friends from the neighborhood. We’ve been through some trials and tribulations raising our kids, but I’m really glad that Joy and I could do it together.
