The Beauty of Migration
Autumn has arrived in Kansas. After six years in the south, the magic of leaves changing and the smell of fall has me experiencing the beauty around me with fresh eyes. Amplifying the experience, even more, is watching my 3-year-old, Autumn (can you tell I love this season?), crunch and roll through piles of freshly fallen leaves.
This afternoon, Autumn (my daughter) pointed at the sky and yelled, “honk, honk!” Since last week’s early snow, Canadian geese have gotten the message…it’s time to migrate south. They have been flying over Fort Leavenworth to rest at Missouri River before continuing along their journey.
Standing outside on such a beautiful fall afternoon put me in a reflective mood. There is beauty in migration. The journey into the unknown with the hope of something better. The geese know it is their season to leave their comfortable summer homes. They fly together for thousands of miles to a place they hope will be safe until they can return.

As we progress over the years and our priorities change, our lives begin to clutter up with stuff.

This is Me
When I was initially asked if I would consider being a contributor for AWN, I thought, “What could I possibly offer that could inspire and excite readers?”
I’m just a normal Army wife pushing through each day, many times solo, with overwhelming obligations and responsibilities. I’m just like everyone else.
But, maybe that’s where I can connect with the readers.
This Veterans Day, Thank a Milspouse
A family’s love is the best medicine. That is what my great-uncle Zachary always believed and it’s a phrase I hold near and dear to my heart. Zach Fisher and his wife, Elizabeth, created Fisher House Foundation when they saw the need for our heroes to have family nearby while undergoing medical treatments at VA hospitals and military installations far from home.
Thankful for Family Day
Happy November! There is no set time or place for gratitude—it’s welcome anytime, anywhere. However, November is traditionally a month for more widespread thankfulness.
Last year, I was sincerely thankful for hitting my one year writing anniversary with AWN. You may even notice my piece from last year started off the exact same way, “Happy November!” You will be hard pressed to find ways to separate gratitude from happy.
