7 Tips for a Short-Notice PCS
At a friend’s house some years ago, I noticed several rooms in her house were empty and taped off like crime scenes. Curious, of course, I wondered aloud about it and was informed these rooms were packed and prepped for PCS and now off limits. The family was down to living in just a couple of rooms in the house.
While this might sound extremely organized, the strangest part to me was that, while they had orders in hand, their impending move was six months away. Six months!
Next Stop: Funky Town
I’ve recently lived (barely) through some intense, life-altering, earth-shattering events. Specifics are best kept for another time, when I’ve had proper sleep, time to comprehend, digest, and process all the things, and there are so many things.
From start ’til now, it’s been a grueling, frustrating, heart-wrenching (and many more “..ings”) 10 months. And while I can see the end will eventually come, no one involved can name a date. So here I am, month 10 of this “event” in my life, and I feel as if I’ve found a specific theme park called “Emotional Rollercoaster City.”
Hurry Up and Wait (and 3 Ways to Deal)
“Hurry up and wait is my favorite part of military life,” said no milspouse ever.
Ain’t that the truth?!
My family is currently in yet (another!) hurry up and wait season. And it is about as much fun as talking on the phone to TRICARE while shopping at the commissary on payday.

5 Things to Know About Opening Custodial Accounts
As parents, you want to get your children set up on the right path. You want to ensure that, should rough times fall upon you or your career, your child’s future is protected. It’s a scary thought, but one you no doubt must consider. It is one of your only means of protecting your child from the trials and tribulations that could potentially come your way, and you don’t want your children to suffer negatively as a consequence of your misfortune.
The problem is, some people set up custodial accounts for flagrant uses. For instance, some parents have used their children’s accounts to qualify for a lower tax bracket. However, most people use custodial accounts as they’re meant to be used; which is to say, they put money aside for their child for when they come of age—like a preemptive savings account. That’s a good thing!
Those Tough Questions
“Mommy, who is he warring against?” Cue one of many questions I wasn’t prepared to answer.
We are broaching new and uncharted territory in our house. The last two deployments, my kids were little. First one as a married couple (his second) was over before the oldest was 8 months old. The second one was when the kids were 5 months old (until 12 months) and 2.5 until 3 years old.
