Don’t Overlook Your Renters Insurance—Ever
February always reminds me of the most challenging experience my family has had as serial military renters.
Since arriving at my husband’s first duty station in 2010, we’ve always chosen to live in on-post housing or rent a home off post, and before that, we rented apartments. We aren’t yet sure where we’ll settle in the end, so we hesitate to purchase a home.
One of the most important things you can do as a renting military family is purchase renters insurance. With a military bank like USAA, it’s a very inexpensive monthly fee, but it protects you much more than you might imagine.
I found this out the hard way.
Why Military Families Need Renters Insurance
With heavy rain falling outside, our military family chose to stay in and enjoy a cozy Friday night at home. Fixing a bowl of buttery popcorn and filling our cups with bubbly soda, we made our nest in the family room to watch a movie. Noticing the puddle of water forming on the floor, my husband was drawn to the corner of the room to inspect the area, where he found a steady dripping leak. As he reached up to lightly touch the suddenly stained ceiling, a large portion of soggy drywall came flopping down onto the bookshelf below. While rushing over to rescue our books and mementos, I exclaimed, “Better call the landlord!”
Experience Counts for Something
Have you ever noticed how, in society, experience seems to count for very little? Well, depending on how old you are as you read this, you may not feel it as much as those of us who come with lots of “experience!”
It’s true, I’m not as comfortable with all the ins and outs of my computer as you may be, but I’m pretty good at knowing how to have a conversation that leads to a promotion or new business.
You’re right, I might not live to communicate everything through a text message, but I’m great at sending a handwritten thank you note or letter that someone actually hangs up on the wall above their desk.
That said, I recently discovered one area where experience counts for everything! A happy marriage.

Grafenwoehr is the hub of United States Army Garrison Bavaria, which includes Grafenwoehr, Vilseck, Hohenfels, and Garmisch. It is located in Germany in the beautiful state of Bavaria. Not only does the installation offer a unique military experience, it also offers the chance to discover Germany and other European countries in the area. You are only a short drive from Czech, Poland, and Austria, and can drive, fly, or take a train to a number of other locations. Moving overseas can be daunting, but don’t let it scare you. You will have the unique opportunity to partake in German customs and traditions, learn a new language (or at least some of it), and experience the food.

The alarm went off. My bleary eyes slowly focused on the time—3:45 a.m.
There are few things that will get me up before the sun: my crying baby, saying yet another see-ya-later to my beloved infantryman before a duty-required departure, or in this case, an opportunity to screen the new Warner Bros. movie, “12 Strong,” in Hollywood, California.
